Age spots, they’re unavoidable signs of aging skin, right? Not quite. The truth is these unwelcome ugly brown spots that start appearing sometime in our thirties and forties aren’t caused by aging at all, well not directly that is.

The only correlation between age spots and aging is this: as we grow older it means our skin has had more exposure time in the sun. The more sun we are exposed to the more damage to our skin. A tan is our skin’s way of defending itself from sun’s harmful rays penetrating down through to our skin cells causing sun damage. Overtime sun exposure begins to take its toll, damaging skin cells that contain melanin (what gives our skin its color) weaken and malfunction spilling uneven amounts of pigment, making scattered dark spots.

Since most skin spots are exacerbated by the sun it is important to see a dermatologist if any strange new skin changes pop up (to rule out anything dangerous such as melanoma). A brief overview and description of the varying types of age spots and forms of pigmentation help us identify what’s what.

Freckles are small tannish-brown specks that usually fade away during sun-deprived winters and resurface in sun-drenched summers.
Lentigines are known as age spots or liver spots.

As we grow older, these smaller to medium size brown spots surface and multiply most commonly on all skin areas with maximum sun exposure (face, hands, and chest).
Uneven skin tone vs. a few specific spots involves larger areas of pigmentation causing skin to appear contrast, darker in some areas and lighter in others.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation are dark spots that develop after pimples, bug bites, or other flare-ups of irritation stubbornly linger long after the initial inflammation heals.

Melasma is brown pigmentation that appears as an outbreak of larger patches rather than distinct spots. Melasma is related to hormones therefore most likely occurs on cheeks, foreheads, and around lips when women are pregnant, taking hormone replacement, or birth control pills.

The bright side to all of this is age spots are avoidable, and there are ways to reverse your skin, and fade away dark pigmentation that all ready exists.
