What is the bodies largest organ? It is something that most people never think of as an organ of the body because they take it for granted. You may be surprised to learn that the body’s largest organ is your skin..
Now the skin is sort of complex and does a lot of things to protect you from not only the elements but also germs, bacteria, and other noxious elements that attack your body. The skin is your first line of defense against all those obnoxious critters that try to invade your body.

Some of these bad guys are self-inflicted. Yes, I am speaking about those “coffin nails”, cigarettes. They are not called coffin nails just for the fun of it. There is a lot of truth behind those words. Not only are cigarettes bad for you because they contain all sorts of toxins that even would not be allowed in a dump or landfill, but the most insidious thing that cigarettes do is that they cause wrinkles. I’m not kidding. Research has proven this. If you want some premature wrinkles, smoke cigarettes. Perhaps you have seen a man or woman with a lot of wrinkles, the chances are that they are chain smokers and would not be caught without a cigarettes clenched tightly in their fingers.
The skin is made up of three layers;
Dermis
epidermis
subcutaneous
The epidermis is the layer that is on the outside and functions as a homeland security agent to protect and secure the body from all external elements that occur in the environment. A continual process is at work in the epidermis to move the bottom layer to the top layer. These are the cells called keratinocytes and the goal is to build up a large amount of keratin which grows into a tough outer layer. It is normal for these cells to flake off, but if the process becomes too fast the skin can look scaly.
The subcutaneous tissue is on the bottom as you might have suspected because sub means under and this tissue contains fat cells. They not only make the skin look full and plump, but they also provide some insulation to the body to ward of cold and heat
The middle layer of the skin is called the dermis. It connects everything together and is called oddly enough connective tissue. There are several connective tissues that hold the skin together. One is collagen which gives the skin its strength, then there is elastin fibers that let the skin bounce and spring back from dents and bruises, and th last I will mention is a big long word that is hard to pronounce at first, glycosaminoglycans or GAGs. No is not funny, it’s a GAG. The main job of the GAG is to maintain and support collagen and elastin that gives skin its turgidity or spring.
So what does this all have to do with wrinkles you may ask?
A lot. As you get older, your epidermal layer becomes less sticky and thinner. Because the skin is thinner, less moisture is retained in the skin and that causes dryness. Research shows that every 10 years, we lose 10% of our epidermal cells so that the skin is unable to repair itself from damage less quickly. That’s when the anti aging products can offer some help.
Anti wrinkle cream come with a variety of ingredients that may remove wrinkles to a certain point. They can never be eliminated but the anti-wrinkle creams will improve your appearance. Some of the leading ingredients are:
Kinetin
Tea Extracts
Retinol
Hydroxy acids
Copper peptides
Coenzyme Q10
These substances are called cosmetics by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). Cosmetics do not have to have a prescription from a doctor. The FDA classifies them as having no medical value. The only time the FDA might step in is when there are blatant advertisements claiming the cosmetics are drugs or may pose a health hazard. Alpha hydroxy came into their radar in 2007 when it was found that the hydroxy acids could increase the risk of sunburn.
